A rather contentious topic is whether or not organic food is better than conventional food; health-wise. First of all, let me start off by explaining that when I say “organic food,” I mean food that has been grown or made without the use of artificial chemicals. “Conventional food,” on the other hand, is anything other than that, such as crops sprayed with pesticides, genetically modified organisms, or GMO’s, and so on. Many people spend tons of money on organic food because they believe it is better for their health. However, the majority of people buy conventional food because it is much cheaper than organic alternatives. Due to the “healthier” option being so expensive, it leads a lot of people, including myself, questioning whether or not it is truly necessary to go organic.
Therefore, many people have done studies testing whether this theory is true or not. There have been tests concluded based on the nutritional value between the two, resulting in a rather mixed, but insignificant difference between the two. In most cases, organic foods are the more nutritious option; while on the other hand, a lot of cases show that the two are tied; and very rarely some cases suggest some conventional foods contain more nutritious vitamins and minerals than organic foods.
While the results from the nutritionally-based experiments aren’t significant enough to make someone fully go organic, there are other factors to consider. People have also experimented with animals to test the benefits or setbacks of both types of foods, which could also affect humans over time. The studies concluded that a variety of animals fed conventional feed, as opposed to organic, had a higher mortality rate, were less fertile, had fewer eggs, and also grew less. In other studies, it has been suggested that adding antibiotics to certain animals we eat results in the human immunization of them, which obviously isn’t a good thing. Not only that, but the hormones added to dairy cows to induce more production of milk are said to be associated with many different cancers. In conclusion, there are many studies, other than these, that show clear downsides to eating conventional foods.
With that being said, not all conventional foods are needed to be steered clear of. It is all a matter of knowing where your food comes from, and choosing the right types of food to eat either organically or conventionally, because it is very expensive to eat solely organic foods versus conventional foods. This is why I was interested in doing my research paper on this topic, because it helped me to choose wisely which foods I eat to maintain good health, without spending loads of money.
